Introduction

The Gold Award is the pinnacle of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme. Recognised by employers and universities worldwide, Gold represents a significant achievement that demonstrates commitment, resilience, and personal excellence.

What is the Gold Award?

The Gold Award is the highest level of achievement in the DofE programme. It's a substantial commitment that demonstrates your ability to set goals, overcome challenges, and make a positive impact on your community. Gold Award holders are highly valued by employers and universities.

Requirements

• Age: 16 years and over

• Minimum time: 12 months if you've completed Silver, 18 months if you're starting directly at Gold

• Sections: Complete all five sections (Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition, and Residential)

The Five Sections

1. Volunteering: Volunteer for 12 months (or 6 months if you've completed Silver). Take on significant responsibility, perhaps leading a team, managing a project, or making a substantial contribution to your chosen organisation. This section develops leadership, empathy, and social responsibility.

2. Physical: Engage in physical activity for 12 months (or 6 months if you've completed Silver). Challenge yourself to reach new levels of fitness and skill. This could involve training for a competition, mastering a new discipline, or pushing your physical boundaries.

3. Skills: Develop a skill over 12 months (or 6 months if you've completed Silver). Work towards mastery, perhaps achieving a qualification, completing a major project, or reaching an advanced level. This section demonstrates dedication and personal excellence.

4. Expedition: Complete a 4-day, 3-night expedition in wild country. This is the most challenging expedition, requiring advanced navigation skills, excellent teamwork, and significant preparation. You'll explore remote areas, navigate complex terrain, and demonstrate your resilience and outdoor competence.

5. Residential (Gold Only): Spend 5 days and 4 nights away from home on a shared activity with people you don't know. This unique section develops your ability to work with new people, adapt to different environments, and contribute to a shared goal. Examples include conservation projects, outdoor activity courses, or community service projects.
